What is an MMSI number?

The MMSI is a nine-digit code that the ANFR assigns to a vessel operating radio equipment with Digital Selective Calling (DSC). It allows a safe identification of the vessel by the rescue centres, especially in case of distress.

Why is it necessary to obtain an MMSI number?

Safety first!

"Yes, but I don't expect to have any problems, my boat is in good condition"

Surprising? Yet this is the most frequent answer received during inspections.Obtaining an MMSI number, beyond being required by certain insurance companies, particularly for offshore sailing or in certain parts of the Globe, is a prerequisite for all sea trips, even coastal ones, which every boat's skipper should be obliged to have.

An MMSI number is a guarantee of being spotted more efficiently by the emergency services, and when you know the theory of the glass of water: to stop a fire, you need a glass of water the first second, a bucket the first minute and ... a ton of water after 10 minutes, the importance of being spotted quickly makes perfect sense!

We can obtain an MMSI number for you under your boat's flag. Indeed you are required to obtain an MMSI number in the country where your boat is registered. This seems quite logical when you know that the ship registration services share their registry with the national radio frequency services.

So trust us, we can register your fixed and portable VHF equipment, EPIRBs, SSBs, etc. so that you can sail in the best possible conditions.

Can we recover an already active MMSI number?

Do you want to start the process ?

Let's obtain my MMSI number !

The MMSI is specific to the vessel's equipment identified on the licence (e.g. 228 157 500 assigned to the vessel OCEAN, owned by Mr X).
What equipment must be registered on the MMSI licence?
All equipment on board that accepts MMSI programming must be coded with the same MMSI (VHF DSC, Cospas Sarsat beacon, AIS, SSB...)

One MMSI = one vessel = one owner

Can I use the MMSI number of my previous boat?

As mentioned above, it is not possible to keep an MMSI number from one boat to another, even if you were already registered

How do I program an MMSI number?

On most VHF DSC systems, the user has to program the MMSI in a specific menu. The operating instructions should be read carefully. It is important to check that the MMSI code displayed corresponds to your vessel (MMSI indicated on the licence) before performing the final validation. On many VHF DSC models, if the MMSI is not correct, you will not be able to correct it. You will need to contact the distributor or dealer to change the code. The safest solution is to have your VHF coded by the dealer or distributor (to be agreed upon when purchasing the equipment).

How do I check that my MMSI number is correctly programmed?

Access to the programmed MMSI can vary from one VHF DSC model to another. Even though there are major differences in the names of the various menus, it is best to consult the user manual. Caution! With most VHF models, you are only allowed one attempt to program your VHF. Any error requires the intervention of a technician to reprogram the VHF.

Do I need a radio operator's licence?

It depends on the flag, some countries require a licence to register an MMSI number, while others do not. However, all flags, as well as informed navigators, advise passing a radio operator certificate, even a restricted one, in order to be able to use one's howequipment correctly.
